The 12 capacities and 48 skills
Once I moved from diagnosis to development, I wanted something more rigorous than vague ideas about “growth” or “healing”.
I wanted a full map.
So I studied widely across DSM, ICD, psychotherapy, executive coaching, developmental theory, and wisdom literature.
What I eventually found was this:
There seem to be 12 core human capacities that matter again and again across distress, recovery, leadership, maturity, and high performance.
Each of those capacities can be broken into 4 competencies.
That gave me 48 trainable skills.
I called this framework the Lifelong Capacities Map®.
It is, in essence, a structured map of human development.
Not just for therapy clients.
Not just for coaches.
Not just for leaders.
For human beings.
Because many people are told to “do the work”, “develop yourself”, or “grow” without ever being given a clear curriculum for what that actually means.
The Lifelong Capacities Map® was my answer to that problem.
If you want to keep the stronger version, this also works well:
It is, in essence, a curriculum for human development.
