Embodied Presence: Letting Who I Am Shape What I Do

Many people are trying to make important decisions from the neck up.

What should I do?
What is the right decision?
What is the plan?

But some of the most important truths about a person do not first arrive as thoughts.

They arrive as a felt sense in the body.

In my work, I often see people trying to answer higher-order questions about meaning, purpose, direction, relationships, leadership, or identity without being well connected to the more foundational layers underneath.

Not because they are weak.
Not because they are unintelligent.
But because they were not sufficiently helped, early in life, to develop the capacities that support embodied presence, emotional processing, and a stable & developing sense of self.

That is not a character flaw.
It is often a developmental consequence of what happened to them, or what did not happen for them, in the years when these capacities most needed support.

A great deal of therapy and coaching, at its best, is about helping a person rebuild that connection.

Here is a simple exercise.

Say something true about yourself out loud.

It might be something light:
“I love being in the sun.”

Or something painful:
“I went through a great deal as a child.”

Then pause and ask:

Where do I feel this in my physical body?
Can I place my hand there?
What feeling do I notice as I stay with it?
Speaking from that place, that feeling, what meaning does this hold for me right now?
Given that, what do I now choose to do in life?

This is simple, but it is not shallow.

Because when I become more deeply connected to who I am, I become better able to choose what I do next.

In the PsycheVita approach, this kind of process draws on foundational capacities such as 8.2 Somatic Attunement, 1.2 Adaptive Emotional Processing, and 3.4 Healthy Self-Worth. These lower-layer capacities help make possible the higher-layer work of meaning, purpose, choice, behaviour, and contribution.

Sometimes the way forward in life does not begin with a plan.

It begins with telling the truth.
Feeling where it lands.
Staying with what is evoked.
And allowing who I am to shape what I do.
